The multidisciplinary artist presents three new Elastic Drawings and five paintings on the occasion of his newly published onestar press artist book.
The paintings are a new direction for Yonatan Vinitsky, taking on the technique of ‘back-painting’ that the artist has frequently employed in the past on acetate and glass, notably layering and introducing objects and photographs within the paintings themselves.
As the artist states, "Each work is a story / narrative / dream compressed from numerous elements that do not usually sit together; I am trying to direct and organise them together into one image. The 3-D nature of the works is important to me, you need to move around them and take look from different sides in order to experience them; they are different with each view, exploding with details.

The use of elastic has additionally been a major part of Vinitsky’s practice over the past decade. Starting in 2006 with smaller geometric works that employed found red rubber bands stretched between nails, the artist gravitated to depict single objects with the introduction of yarn before moving on to more complex large-scale scenes with the use of black elastic in various widths.

Yonatan Vinitsky's process of creating these works starts with a search for an image generally taken from archives, vintage cartoon books and magazines, and instructions manuals. The selected image is then redrawn by hand and ‘translated’ by Vinitsky to define the varying positions of nails that will maintain the stretched elastic for each Elastic Drawing.
